History of Castello

A Living Legacy Rooted in Time

Set high on the Monte Tizio hills, Castello di Procopio has borne witness to centuries of history, from ancient Roman devotion to medieval conflict and monastic retreat. Archaeological surveys indicate that the site once housed a temple dedicated to the Roman goddess Tedite, later becoming home to an Austrian Hermitage and, by the Middle Ages, the Church of San Pietro.

An Artistic Landscape

This timeless valley has long served as a source of inspiration. It is believed that artists such as Cimabue and Giotto drew from these surroundings while working on the Basilica in nearby Assisi. In ”Lives of the Artists”, Vasari notes how the early Renaissance marked a turning point, drawing creativity from nature and landscape - much like the one visible from the castle’s walls.

Heritage Reimagined

Today, Castello di Procopio stands renewed — its medieval heart intact, its presence elevated for the present day. As part of the Mandarin Oriental Exclusive Homes collection, it offers a unique expression of Italian history, timeless beauty, and refined hospitality.

From Fortress to Landmark

Castello di Procopio wasn’t built yesterday. The fortress first rose from the Umbrian hills at the behest of Holy Roman Emperor Frederico Barbarossa as a strategic stronghold in the 1100s.

Over the centuries Procopio has stood at the crossroads of imperial and papal power struggles. Its position commands panoramic views across the Tiber Valley - scenery that has changed little through the centuries.

Thoughtful Restoration
Faithful Design

The restoration of Castello di Procopio was led by architect Domenico Minchilli, with interiors by Martyn Lawrence Bullard. Informed by archival drawings and archaeological evidence, the project preserved the castle’s original character while enhancing it with modern sensibilities. Each element was chosen to honour the past without compromising contemporary comfort.
